Stem bus and stem delivery phase: when groups fight the print on mono fold

A drum bus, vocal stem, or guitar group sounds huge in headphones. Soloed, it is fine. Against the print, or when the mixer folds for phone, club, or broadcast, kick body, vocal chest, or low guitar disappears. Stems fight each other and they fight the 2-mix. Fix polarity, timing, parallel crush, and stereo FX on the stem first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo material.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a stem loudness tool, not a widener, and not a substitute for bus gain structure or mono audition. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What stem-fold failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the stem bus. Flip the master (or a utility) to mono.
  2. A/B bus bypassed vs engaged. Note what disappears: kick body, snare shell, vocal chest, low guitar.
  3. Solo subgroups inside the bus (kick+bass, OH+rooms, doubles). Find which pair collapses.
  4. Check correlation on the bus only, then on the mix bus with that stem muted vs unmuted (correlation meters).

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity first

Flip the obvious offender: bottom snare, room pair, DI vs amp, parallel print. Immediate body return beats subtle rotation. Guide: polarity vs phase.

2. Time-align multi-mics when arrival is the problem

Overheads vs close, cab vs DI, layered samples. Different job from spectral repair: vs time-align. Source guides: OH / rooms, guitar dual-cab, sample stacks.

3. Trim parallel crush / New York compression

Parallel buses often reintroduce polarity and timing fights. Mute the parallel; re-fold. Guide: parallel compression / bus phase.

4. Simplify stereo FX on the stem

Stereo reverb/delay returns and chorus on group buses are common mono killers. Lower wet, HPF returns, prefer mono throws on critical sources. Reverb returns · delay throws · chorus / flanger / phaser.

5. Check imagers / Mid-Side wideners on the bus

Wideners on group buses trade fold safety for headphone drama. Bypass, re-fold. vs imagers · Mid/Side vs phase repair.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If the stereo stem must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Stem delivery checklist (to mix or master)

1. Label clearly and match print intent

Name stems so the mixer knows dry vs wet, with/without FX, and whether parallel crush is printed. Ambiguous stems get summed blindly and hollow on fold.

2. Deliver consistent start times and sample rate

All stems from bar 1 (or agreed offset). Mismatched offsets look like phase forever.

3. Mono-check each stem alone, then all stems summed

Solo each stem in mono. Then play the full stem set in mono without the old 2-mix. Note fights between drums and bass, vocals and guitars, FX and dry.

4. Provide a reference print and a mono-safe note

Include the stereo print you signed off on, plus a one-line note if a stem was intentionally wide and fragile. Better: fix the fragility before delivery.

5. Watch film / broadcast / club destinations

If stems feed LoRo, radio, or PA, fold harder. Guides: LoRo, broadcast, club / PA.

6. Optional null / mono workflow in the DAW

Host-agnostic habit before you ship: DAW null-test + mono-check.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo stem in mono → polarity → time-align → trim parallel crush → simplify stereo FX/wideners → mono-check stem set summed → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a print → delivery labels + reference print → fold again for phone/club/broadcast if that is the destination.
